Pfc Hippie was killed while walking point on 29 May 1968.

Early on the morning of the 29th we moved out of our position to sweep through a bombed out village. After moving approximately 100 yards Pfc Hippie turned and shouted to the squad leader that he saw movement in a treeline. A few seconds later the treeline erupted with automatic weapons and machine guns. The fight that ensued lasted well into the afternoon. Casualties were heavy.

I had the opportunity to serve with Pfc Hippie from infantry training at Camp Geiger, NC, until his death. He was a friend and I will never forget him. We had only been in country a few weeks and this was the first action we had been in.

Notes from The Virtual Wall

Delta 1/3 Marines lost six men killed in action in the fight described above: Alpha 1/3 lost four more men.

All the military records show his surname spelled as "Hippie" and his name is engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that way:

In 1995, when the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial was being developed, Bradford's brother contacted the New Jersey organization and requested that his name be spelled "Hippe" - and so it is:

Army PFC Charlie A. Carden shares the New Jersey memorial panel for 29 May; he and eight other men from A Company, 1/35 Infantry, were killed in a firefight on 29 May 1966.
