Douglas Allen Varner grew up in Newark, Ohio, graduating from Newark High School in 1966. He completed his baccalaureate degree at the University of Cincinnati with a perfect four point average and had been accepted into Stanford Law School when he was drafted. During this time his family had relocated to Lancaster, California, and he entered the service from Lancaster.
