William "Billy" Richard was my friend. He had the bunk next to me at Ft. Devens, Mass, when we were stateside. He was lucky in that his home was in Mass and he was able to go home weekends regularly. He was close to his family and loved them. We were sent to Vietnam in October, 1965. Billy was killed when his company, "B" Company, was ambushed at Bien Hoa, on December 22, 1965. I have often wondered what Christmas has been like for his family through the years. I still miss him. When he was killed, it was the only time I cried in Vietnam. |
