11 Apr 2007 Philip Reed was injured on 2 June 1968 in a helicopter crash abooard the USS VALLEY FORGE (LPH-8) while underway off of South Vietnam. He was functioning as a crewmember aboard his helicopter, assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265. He jumped from the ship's deck into the South China Sea to avoid and extinguish the flames from the CH-46A helicopter crash. He was rescued by another CH-46A helicopter from the squadron assigned to the USS VALLEY FORGE. His condition when recovered from the South China Sea was SERIOUS according to the ship's log. A Note from The Virtual Wall Three men died as a result of a take-off accident involving CH-46A BuNo 152545 aboard USS VALLEY FORGE on 02 June 1968: SgtMaj Jack E. Muisener, Hartford, CT, HMM-265 Cpl Philip P. Reed, Elmwood, IL, H&MS-16 (DoI 06/09/1968) ABH3 Andrew J. Wang, Johnston, RI USS VALLEY FORGE Sergeant Major Muisener and Corporal Reed were air crewmen. Petty Officer Wang was a member of the ship's flight deck handling crew; he was struck by the helo's rotor blades as the aircraft rolled on its starboard side.
