Philip Reed was injured on 2 June 1968 in a helicopter crash abooard the USS VALLEY FORGE (LPH-8) while underway off of South Vietnam. He was functioning as a crewmember aboard his helicopter, assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265. He jumped from the ship's deck into the South China Sea to avoid and extinguish the flames from the CH-46A helicopter crash. He was rescued by another CH-46A helicopter from the squadron assigned to the USS VALLEY FORGE. His condition when recovered from the South China Sea was SERIOUS according to the ship's log. He died seven days later during medical treatment for his injuries.
