Ernesto was from Pecos, Texas. He attended Pecos schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army with the intent of making a career. He was married and had a son. He was with the 501st Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky when he re-enlisted. The regiment mobilized to Vietnam in November and December 1967. Ernesto was assigned as an infantryman and was airborne qualified. He was killed in contact with the NVA during aftermath of the TET offensive on March 26, 1968. He was buried with full military honors in his home town of Pecos. He is remembered by his community and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial located in Midland, Texas. |
