27 Oct 2005 I met this Marine as a recruit when he was a Staff Sergeant and was the Drill Instructor Platoon Commander for Platoon #267 at MCRD San Diego. That was in August of 1965. I found out that "Andy" had taken a promotion to an officer level, and was assigned to a Tank Battalion in Vietnam. A Note from The Virtual Wall On 12 April 1967 elements of Alpha Company, 3rd Tanks, were supporting the 3rd Bn, 9th Marines. The 3rd Tank Bn Command Chronology for April 1967 contains the following entries: S-3 (Operations) Journal: 12 Apr - 1600 - From Co "A": At 121600H tank received penetration of RPG-2 round at (YD 187726). Enemy position was (YD 187727). Another tank expended 20 rounds 90mm HE with inconclusive results. While being pulled back to Command Post, damaged tank hit an antitank mine at 121645H location vicinity (YD 193735). Results of action were 1 USMC KIA, 2 USMC WIA (medevac), and heavy damage to tank. S-4 (Logistics) Journal: 12 Apr - 1800 - M48A3 tank USMC # 202140 hit mine in Dong Ha TAOR." 2ndLt Anderson was the only fatality in Alpha 3rd Tanks; there are no known casualties from the 3/9 Marines.
